Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for president in the 2023 election, has alluded to the potential of backing Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party in the previous election, in the 2027 election.

The former vice president, who is currently in talks to unite with certain opposition political parties, declared that if the party chooses the former governor of Anambra, he will not think twice about backing Obi in the upcoming election.

The Sun claims that during an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Atiku revealed the decision.

According to ZINGTIE, Obi and Atiku recently had a private meeting that raised rumours about a possible merger of opposition political parties before the 2027 general election.

Atiku stated, “We can merge to achieve a common goal,” confirming the opposition parties’ decision to unite to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC, in the 2027 election. Therefore, nothing can stop us if we want to accomplish that. It is achievable.

Atiku declared that he would not think twice about backing Peter Obi if the newly formed party determined that it was the South-East’s time and Obi was selected.

“I have said repeatedly and I even said it before the 2023 general elections that if PDP decides to zone the presidential ticket to the South or South-East specifically, I won’t contest it.

“As long as it is the decision of the party, I will abide by it. But I contested the 2023 presidential ticket because it was thrown open to all members of the party”.
