Nigerians have been cautioned by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to take the 2027 general elections lightly. INEC emphasized that vote-selling for cash could have detrimental effects on the nation for the next four years.
Victoria Eta-Messi, who serves as INEC’s Director of Voter Education, issued the warning on Friday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show when asked about vote buying.
According to Eta-Messi, the purpose of INEC’s voter sensitisation campaigns is to reach out to citizens’ consciences so that they may comprehend the lasting ramifications of their electoral decisions.
She challenged the reasoning behind accepting as little as N20,000 in return for a vote, pointing out that such a choice dictates leadership and governance results for four years.
She stated that the fate of the country is heavily influenced by the choices Nigerians make during elections, emphasizing that the nation is owned by its citizens and their electoral decisions are significant.
Eta-Messi clarified that INEC does not dictate the economic circumstances of Nigerians, recognizing that numerous citizens are impacted by pervasive adversity.
However, she stated that the ongoing economic difficulties should drive Nigerians to be more intentional and sufficiently enraged to seize control of their future by electing leaders capable of effectively tackling their issues.
She mentioned that INEC would persist in its initiatives to educate and raise awareness among voters about the dangers of vote buying and to guarantee that citizens are completely aware of the significance and influence of their votes before the 2027 elections.
She said: “But then, like I always say, during our sensitization, opportunities and platforms, what is the alternative? So you will accept N20,000 now, and that takes you for four years. So we speak to their conscience to let them see that this country belongs to us and that the success that will be recorded will be determined by the decisions and choices that they take. So if they think that N20,000 will fix their problem, that’s unfortunate. But our messages and messaging is targeted towards ensuring that we continue singing the song until they get it.
“Yeah, it’s not our doing. The Commission does not determine the economic status of citizens. So it’s going around, everybody is feeling the economic situation and hardship, and the more reason why citizens and Nigerians should be angry and should take their future into their hands to decide who should best lead them in the next four years”.
