Abiodun Idowu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who is the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Osun State, has provided an explanation for the continued tenure of reinstated local government council executives, despite their terms officially ending on October 22, 2025.

On Sunday, Idowu stated that the officials’ continued presence was due to ongoing court processes, emphasizing that the issue was awaiting legal clarification at the Federal High Court in Osogbo.

He clarified that the executives impacted were elected during the local government elections held statewide in October 2022.

He stated that their time in office was interrupted by a Federal High Court ruling that resulted in their ouster prior to the end of their term.

After the court ruling, Governor Ademola Adeleke disbanded the councils via an Executive Order issued in November, using the judgment as justification.

Idowu stated that the situation changed following the Court of Appeal’s ruling on February 10, 2025, which reinstated the elected executives and permitted them to resume their duties at their respective councils.

He noted that the appellate court’s ruling was still valid, emphasizing that it had not been appealed to the Supreme Court.

In explaining the current legal position, Idowu stated that their return to court was due to the interruption of their tenure and emphasized that the executives were not seeking additional time in office.

“Our tenure was interrupted for more than two years, and that is why we are seeking judicial determination.

“We are not asking for tenure elongation; what we want is tenure determination,” Idowu stated.

He clarified further, “The court is to decide whether our tenure ended in October 2025 or should run from February 10, 2025, when we resumed office.”

Criticizing the manner they where removed, Idowu said, “The governor used an executive order to sack us instead of allowing us to exhaust all legal means to determine the matter.”

He also referenced past political events, noting, “When the governor was removed by the tribunal, he was allowed to exhaust all legal avenues up to the Supreme Court, but we were denied that opportunity.”

On the pending case, Idowu said, “The matter is still before the Federal High Court in Osogbo and is coming up on February 3, 2026, after which we will know the lawful end of our tenure.”
