Abia State Governor Alex Otti has emphasized the need for a structured system to support reverse migration, explaining that such an approach would encourage Nigerians living abroad to return home with confidence.

The governor observed that while some Nigerians overseas are willing to come back, they remain uncertain about how to begin their reintegration.

Governor Otti made these remarks during a meeting with Sharon Dimanche, the Chief of Mission for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Nigeria.

He revealed that his administration intends to work closely with relevant ministries to offer reintegration assistance to returning citizens.

Otti noted that the lack of clear support systems has caused many Nigerians living abroad to delay their return, adding that a well-organized reception process would help boost their confidence.

“Some of them may want to return, but they are afraid of where to even start from,” he said.

He also reiterated his administration’s firm stance against human trafficking and other criminal activities, declaring zero tolerance for such offences.

Governor Otti directed the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, to provide temporary office space for IOM, with plans to establish a permanent facility in the future.

Speaking earlier, Sharon Dimanche highlighted four immediate priorities for IOM: combating human trafficking, tapping into diaspora potential, supporting sustainable reintegration for returnees, and enhancing migration data management.

She expressed her commitment to collaborating closely with the Abia State government in line with its goals.
