The reason why certain students with good UTME marks are not accepted into institutions has been clarified by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Admission is determined by factors other than UTME scores, according to a statement from JAMB.

When choosing students, universities also take post-UTME scores and O-level results into account.

Parents complained to JAMB that universities were unfairly rejecting their children.

They gave the example of a student who failed to match the university’s cut-off scores and was turned away despite having a 201 on the UTME.

Due to his lower ranking than the number of available spaces, another student who received a UTME score of 345 was also not accepted.

Before filing a complaint, JAMB recommended parents to review the ranking mechanism and remind them that admission is competitive.

Additionally, they cautioned against misuse of the “exceptionally brilliant window,” which permits pupils under 16 to take the UTME if they fulfill rigorous academic prerequisites.

Parents and students were reassured by the board that it is still dedicated to maintaining equity and openness in the admissions process.

Instead of raising charges in public, they urged anyone with issues to use JAMB’s official complaint platform.
