A legal professional is facing charges in a High Court located in Akwa Ibom State for the purported murder of her spouse, after a long-concealed family secret involving their houseboy was uncovered.

Abasiesebanga Ikoiwak, the defendant, is charged with having plotted her husband Barrister Godwin Ikoiwak’s death after he allegedly found out that the young man living with them as a houseboy was actually her biological son, not her younger brother as previously stated.

The prosecution provided evidence indicating that the couple had been living together for several years, along with the boy who was part of their household. It has been reported that the deceased believed the boy was a relative of his wife until he began to notice inconsistencies that raised suspicions about the child’s true identity.

A crucial witness for the prosecution testified in court that the deceased barrister had shared with friends his worries about marital tensions and his wife’s history. He purportedly disclosed that his wife had previously worked as a domestic worker and had become pregnant under questionable circumstances—details she kept hidden during their marriage.

The court was informed that the deceased intended to address the issue formally by involving family elders, but he was killed before any meeting could occur. His death prompted a police inquiry that resulted in the arrest of the accused and multiple other suspects.

It has been reported that during the proceedings, investigators presented statements and audio evidence that connect the accused to the crime. The prosecution asserts that the murder was planned in advance and executed to avert the disclosure of the secret.

While the defendant has entered a not-guilty plea regarding the charge, the court has ordered her remand in custody until the trial continues. The case will be heard again at a later date.
