The governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, disclosed that the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) inability to defend him during the state’s current political crisis was the reason behind his decision to leave the party.
Speaking on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Fubara stated that he had turned to the federal government for assistance after encountering obstacles that jeopardized his political existence and position.
“I went to see Mr President not just for a personal visit, but for a consultation on state matters. The most important outcome of that meeting is that we now have full support to leave where we were because we didn’t get the protection we needed,” he said.
Fubara, accompanied by his main supporters, formally declared during the meeting that he was defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He clarified that the APC provided the assistance and security required to deal with the political unrest in Rivers State.
He added, “If President Tinubu had not intervened, there wouldn’t be a Siminalayi Fubara today. We have the people and supporters with us. Our decision is to move to the APC and fully support the President’s second-term bid.”
Fubara’s defection is regarded as a significant political change in Rivers State and is anticipated to have an effect on the political landscape of the state before to the general elections in 2027.
