Lieutenant Ahmad Yerima, the navy officer shown in a widely shared video arguing angrily with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, did not violate any laws, according to Minister of State for Defense Bello Matawalle.
Matawalle stated his stance during an interview with DCL Hausa, according to LEADERSHIP.
The Minister stated that the Lieutenant was courteous to Wike and promised that the officer would not be disciplined.
According to ZINGTIE, since a video of officer Yerima’s altercation with Wike went viral on Tuesday, there have been worries about potential sanctions against him.
When Wike went to a disputed piece of land in Gaduwa District that was purportedly owned by Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (rtd), a former chief of naval staff, the naval officer stopped him, sparking a furious argument.
Matawalle addressed the issue, stating that if it had been handled properly, the incident would have happened.
“The minister should not have confronted him. Lieutenant Yerima was acting on orders. If Wike had any concerns, he should have spoken to his superiors or to me directly since I oversee naval affairs,” Matawalle said.
The Minister described Yerima’s behavior as professional and disciplined, praising his poise during the altercation.
“You can clearly see that he was respectful while standing his ground. As far as we are concerned, he did not break any law or military regulation.
“This whole situation was avoidable. Before the minister went there, he had already spoken with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, who assured him that the matter would be looked into,” Matawalle added.
