The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker Committee in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has denied reports that Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is suffering from an unspecified sickness.
Nigerians began to wonder about Wike’s health after he made recent public appearances in which he appeared noticeably slimmer. On social media sites like YouTube and X (previously Twitter), some detractors questioned Wike’s fragile appearance and urged him to put his health first in light of the ongoing political unrest in Rivers State.
Okocha addressed these worries in an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH, calling them unfounded and baseless. The conversation took place during a media conference regarding the latest information on state APC congresses and a recent court decision that bars Rivers State from obtaining federal allocations.
Okocha, a strong supporter of Wike, vehemently denied allegations that the minister’s ageing appearance and weight loss were signs of a medical condition.
Okocha responded to critics by pointing out that these presumptions were purely speculative and lacked foundation. He emphasised that Wike might unavoidably be the target of public criticism and misunderstanding due to his dedication to his political and ministerial obligations.
Okocha, who was former Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s Chief of Staff from 2007 to 2015, stressed that Wike’s appearance is not a sign of poor health.
Okocha said, “The stories being peddled about his state of health are not true. How is he sick? Has anybody seen him falling or slump? The man is not sick. He is very agile and does what he was appointed to do. Do you even know if he is watching his weight?”
He asserts that it is difficult to get started right away, as Wike has been doing ever since President Bola Tinubu nominated him as a minister.
