In what authorities are calling a horrific murder case, the Lagos State Police Command has detained a woman in relation to the death of a 65-year-old man in the Oko-Oba, Abule-Egba neighborhood of Lagos.
CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command’s spokeswoman, confirmed the occurrence on Sunday and described the unsettling circumstances of the incident.
Hundeyin claims that the police were notified on March 29 that a man’s body had been found in an Oko-Oba service apartment.
“On March 27, at around 5:20 p.m., an unidentified woman rented the apartment with the deceased,” Hundeyin explained.
“But just hours later, she mysteriously left the scene, taking with her the man’s car and valuables, and telling the housekeeper she would return shortly.”
The man’s lifeless body was found the next day during a routine inspection.
Suspicions of foul play were raised when authorities found an empty syringe, two cans of malt drink, and multiple bottles of water at the scene.
After that, the body was taken to the mortuary of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for an autopsy.
The suspect was captured by police in the Oko-Oba area on Saturday night at approximately 9:30 p.m. after a protracted manhunt.
Hundeyin disclosed, “She confessed to poisoning the deceased by spiking his malt drink with a toxic substance, leading to his tragic death.”
Authorities were able to identify the victim, who was first listed as unknown, via additional investigations.
Lagos citizens have been reassured by Commissioner of Police CP Owohunwa Jimoh of the Command’s steadfast dedication to upholding the law and maintaining public safety.
“Our resolve remains firm, those who commit crimes against the community will be pursued and brought to justice,” Hundeyin emphasized.
