Iranian judicial authorities confirmed on Saturday that a woman found guilty of killing her four-year-old stepdaughter in the country’s northwest has been executed.

The kid, identified as Ava, passed away in December 2023 after suffering severe brain injuries connected to alleged frequent mistreatment by her stepmother, according to Mizan Online, the judiciary’s official portal.

Following the completion of the investigation and trial, the woman was found guilty in March 2024 and given a sentence of qisas, an Islamic legal provision that allows the family of a murder victim to request the death penalty.

Iran’s Supreme Court subsequently affirmed the ruling.

The victim’s biological mother had pushed on the application of retributive justice, according to Naser Atabati, Chief Justice of West Azerbaijan province, who stated that the execution took place at dawn.

The identify of the woman who was executed was kept a secret by the authorities.

For severe crimes like murder and rape, Iran upholds the death penalty, which is usually carried out by hanging in the wee hours of the morning.
