Chief Magistrate Attahiru Muhammad-Ibrahim, the wife of Farida Abubakar, was condemned to death by hanging by a High Court in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Abubakar was charged with murder on August 25, 2022, although the primary charge was not filed until July 26, 2023.

According to the prosecution, the defendant fatally stabbed her ex-husband in the abdomen, throat, and left arm with a sharp weapon.

In his ruling, Justice Umar Abubakar, the Chief Judge of the state who presided over the case, stated that the prosecution’s evidence had persuaded the court that the accused party was guilty of the crime.

Mudashiru Sani, the defence attorney representing Abdulnasir Sallau, gave a brief in mitigation, characterising the prisoner as a first-time offender with elderly parents.

The inmate, according to her attorney, looked after her parents and had a little kid who needed maternal care.

Given her age, he begged the judge to reduce the convict’s sentence so that she may serve her time and return to society a changed person.

In response, the state Ministry of Justice’s Lawal Hudu-Garba, the prosecuting attorney and director of public prosecution, urged the court to uphold the text of the law as a deterrent to those committing the same crime.

Sani, the defence attorney, stated shortly after the ruling that his client would appeal the verdict.
