The Lagos State Government has taken a significant step towards promoting healthy living among women at the grassroots through its “Ounje Lo Re Awo” programme. The Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation distributed food items to 250 women drawn from four local governments, aiming to restore dignity and empower women with the tools to live healthier lives.

Commissioner Bolaji Dada emphasized that the initiative goes beyond just feeding, saying, “This initiative is not just about food; it is about restoring dignity, promoting wellness, and empowering our women with the tools to live healthier, more informed lives.

The programme aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision to prioritize women’s welfare, healthcare, and social protection. Dada added, “We thought it would be nice for us to also help women feed appropriately. It’s one thing to have a source of livelihood, it’s another thing to eat right.”

The food distribution event saw women from Kosofe, Agboyi-Ketu, Ikeja, and Ifako-Ijaiye LGs converge at the Isheri Skills Acquisition Centre, where they received food items, including rice, beans, curry, fresh vegetables, eggs, and whole chickens. Dada noted, “Every beneficiary got a full chicken, not half, not quarter because we want them to feel valued and nourished.”

A nutritionist, Sola Malomo, also addressed the women, emphasizing the importance of incorporating fresh vegetables, water, and traditional staples like okra into their diets. The programme demonstrates the Lagos State Government’s commitment to empowering women and promoting healthy living in the community
