Grammy-winning artist Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, has spoken out about the lack of respect for women in Nigeria’s music scene.
She revealed that early in her career, she faced challenges in being taken seriously due to her gender.
“People don’t really respect women in the [music] industry,” Tems said during a recent interview with the BBC.
The singer behind the hit “Love Me Jeje” expressed her desire to change how women perceive themselves within the music industry through her new initiative, The Leading Vibe Initiative.
Tems explained that the project aims to provide women with easier access to opportunities, broader audiences, and greater success.
She encouraged aspiring female artists to clearly define their personal goals, brand identity, and limits, asking, “What are the things that you wouldn’t do for fame and the things that you would do?”
It’s worth noting that other prominent Nigerian female musicians, including Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade, have also addressed the challenges they encounter due to their gender.
