Olufemi Oguntoyinbo, a leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has counseled the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) leadership to give improved working conditions for journalists nationwide first priority.
As he congratulated journalists on this year’s World Press Freedom Day, Oguntoyinbo made this call.
In a statement provided to ZINGTIE on Sunday, the NNPP chieftain commended Nigerian journalists for their tenacity, bravery, and tenacity in carrying out the watchdog duty in society in spite of several obstacles and difficulties.
Nonetheless, he counseled NUJ leadership to put journalists’ well-being first.
According to the NNPP chieftain, Nigerian journalists have shown guts and audacity over the years.
In order for journalists to carry out their fundamental duty of speaking for the voiceless without interference, he urged governments at all levels to consistently permit freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
The chieftain of the NNPP requested the Guild of Editors, the NUJ, and other media organizations to create an insurance program specifically for Nigerian journalists.
“As we observe the World Press Freedom Day, I want to encourage you to continue to perform your expected roles. You have remained the pillars upon which majority of Nigerians especially the downtrodden rest on to survive.
“I also called on the Nigeria Union of Journalists to always strive for better conditions of work for journalists especially in this hard time.
“To the governments, both states and the Federal, my advice is that they should allow freedom of expression, freedom of press and good environment for journalists to disseminate information to society”.
