The Federal Government has received another group of Nigerian citizens evacuated from South Africa following renewed incidents of xenophobic attacks in the country.

The latest batch, consisting of 66 returnees, arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Wednesday night.

Their return forms part of the ongoing evacuation programme approved by President Bola Tinubu in response to the recent wave of violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.

It would be recalled that the first group of evacuees, comprising 258 Nigerians, returned to the country on June 11 aboard a chartered Air Peace flight.

Speaking on the development, the Head of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, in Lagos, Dipo Onabowale, disclosed that the recent evacuation exercise was facilitated by Kunle Soname, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ValueJet.

He added that officials of the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa accompanied the evacuees back to Nigeria.

Onabowale, who represented the Chairman of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the continued evacuation of affected Nigerians from South Africa.

The Federal Government has maintained that efforts will continue to ensure the safety and welfare of Nigerians affected by the xenophobic attacks.

“There are 66 people in the second batch. Logistical challenges encountered during the first evacuation exercise are being addressed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has assured that all registered Nigerians in South Africa would be evacuated,” Onabowale said.
