Police operatives in Anambra State have rescued a 37-year-old woman, Anurika Nweme, from an enraged crowd after she was accused of attempting to take away a newborn baby for alleged trafficking purposes.

The woman was reportedly apprehended at Divine Mercy Hospital located along Eze Iweka Road in Awada, Obosi, after she allegedly entered the facility disguised as a nurse.

Sources at the hospital claimed that she gained access to the maternity section, recorded a video of a newborn baby and was allegedly overheard making phone calls concerning the gender of a child requested by unidentified individuals.

A statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that police officers intervened and removed the suspect from the scene after an angry crowd attempted to attack her.

The command stated that investigations have commenced to establish the true circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether the woman’s alleged mission was to abduct a newborn child.

A video circulating online showed a nursing mother, who had recently delivered a baby boy, narrating her encounter with the suspect.

According to the woman, the suspect approached her and repeatedly asked about the gender of her newborn.

She further alleged that the suspect later made telephone calls during which she was heard discussing the availability of a male child with an individual on the other end of the conversation.

Ikenga said, “The Anambra State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an alleged child trafficking incident following the rescue of a female suspect Anurika Nweme aged 37 years from an angry mob by Police Operatives attached to Awada Divisional Headquarters at Divine Mercy Hospital, Eze Iweka Road, Awada, Obosi.

“According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect in the afternoon of 23rd June 2026 allegedly gained access to the hospital premises disguised in attire resembling that of a nurse and was observed making secret video recordings of newborn babies in the maternity ward.

“When questioned by hospital staff and other persons present, she reportedly claimed to be an employee of the hospital. However, upon verification, the management of the Hospital confirmed that she was not a member of its staff.

“The suspect is currently in protective custody and assisting the investigating police officers in identifying others involved,” the spokesperson said.

Police authorities said investigations are ongoing to uncover the facts surrounding the incident and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.
