Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, APC, Ekiti Central, led the debate on the bill, stating that it seeks to transform YabaTech into a university, which has already been done via a presidential fiat. “This bill seeks to establish Yaba Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos State,” Bamidele said. “The bill essentially seeks to transform and upgrade the YabaTech to Yaba Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos State, which has already been done via a presidential fiat.”

Bamidele expressed excitement about the prospect of transforming the polytechnic into a university, saying it will motivate students and staff, upgrade facilities, and enhance the institution’s capability to achieve its objectives. “I am personally excited by the prospect of transforming this polytechnic to a university of technology and vocational studies, as it will motivate both students and academic staff, just as it will upgrade its facilities and enhance its capability to achieve its objectives,” he said.

The Senate leader emphasised that the new university will encourage the advancement of learning, provide courses of instruction, and promote scholarship and research in all fields of learning with emphasis on technical education. He also noted that the institution aims to emulate the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the world’s foremost educational institutions.
