The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has partnered with the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) and the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) to launch a large-scale medical and surgical outreach in Bauchi State. The initiative targets over 4,500 beneficiaries across four local government areas: Bauchi, Ganjuwa, Warji, and Katagum.
According to Ali Muhammad, assistant manager of the health unit at NEDC, “We are targeting to reduce the suffering of our people and ensure they benefit from the mandate and achievements of the NEDC.” Muhammad emphasised the commission’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of people in the North-East region, stating that “serving humanity is service to God.”
The ATBUTH branch president of ARD, Dr. Danboza Adamu, highlighted the motivation behind the initiative, noting that many residents in the region suffer silently due to lack of access to affordable healthcare. “We are not oblivious to the fact that many in our society are burdened with health challenges, both minor and major, yet they cannot seek help due to financial constraints or lack of access to medical facilities,” Adamu said
The outreach is fully sponsored by the NEDC, and over 100 patients have already been selected for surgeries. “This program is fully sponsored by the NEDC, and we are grateful for their prompt and generous response,” Adamu said. The intervention includes both outpatient consultations and surgical procedures, with a focus on various specialities, including psychiatry, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, paediatric surgery, and neurosurgery.
Dr. Adamu described the situation as a “state of emergency” and reaffirmed the commitment of the resident doctors to continue supporting communities with similar interventions. The outreach is expected to make a significant impact on the lives of underserved individuals, especially those with conditions that would otherwise go untreated due to poverty or lack of access to specialists.
