The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended a 40-year-old man, Clement Anthony, over the alleged killing of a community leader in Bauchi metropolis and recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the attack.

Police said the suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident, while a locally fabricated single-barrel gun and one spent cartridge were recovered from him.

The deceased, identified as 55-year-old Jacob Bature, who served as the Mai Anguwa of Unguwar Ngas in the Inkil area of Bauchi Local Government Area, was allegedly shot on Sunday evening.

According to the command, the incident occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on July 19, when Anthony allegedly armed himself with the locally made firearm and opened fire on the community leader.

Bature reportedly sustained serious gunshot injuries to his right rib area and slumped at the scene.

The incident was reported by a resident at about 8:30 p.m. to the ‘A’ Division Township Police Station, prompting officers to immediately mobilise to the location.

The injured community leader was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, where medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival.

His body has since been deposited in the hospital morgue pending the conduct of an autopsy.

Police disclosed that the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court after the conclusion of investigations.

Reacting to the development, Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the killing and assured residents that those responsible would face justice.

He reiterated the command’s determination to combat violent crimes and cautioned members of the public against the unlawful possession of firearms.

The police commissioner also appealed to residents to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
