The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has chosen not to respond to a 48-hour deadline issued by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, regarding a contested chieftaincy appointment.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the Ooni’s spokesperson, Moses Olafare, disclosed that he had been instructed not to release any formal comment on the issue.

Olafare explained that Oba Ogunwusi found the ultimatum unworthy of acknowledgment and opted to allow public opinion to take its course.

He stated: “My Principal has directed me against issuing a Press Release on the Empty Threat of the Alawada Babasala. I beg to disappoint you, gentlemen of the press.”

Olafare added: “We cannot dignify the ‘undignifyable’ with an official response. We leave the matter to be handled in the public court of opinion, as it is already being treated.”

Olafare also urged for collective focus on unifying themes within the Yoruba community, instead of matters that could sow discord.

“Let’s rather focus on narratives that unite us rather than the ones capable of dividing us. No Press Release please (sic) 48 Hours My Foot!!!” Olafare wrote.

This development follows a warning issued on Monday by the Alaafin of Oyo, who demanded that the Ooni cancel the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title recently granted to Ibadan-based entrepreneur, Engineer Dotun Sanusi.

In a statement released by his media assistant, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin condemned the Ooni’s action, describing it as a challenge to his traditional authority.

He asserted that only the Alaafin holds the exclusive right to bestow titles recognized across Yorubaland.

“The conferment of a Yoruba-wide chieftaincy title by the Ooni is not only ultra vires but an insult to the Titan of Yorubaland,” the Alaafin’s statement read.

The Alaafin also referenced a ruling by the Supreme Court, which he claims supports his position that the authority lies solely with his office.

He warned that failure to reverse the title within 48 hours would result in consequences.
