Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose claims that Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s performance has disproved the predictions of those involved in the country’s economic hub.

This was said by Fayose on Wednesday at the state capital’s Ikeja GRA Network of Roads commissioning.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman Fayose, who lives in the Ikeja GRA, praised the Lagos-based All Progressives Congress (APC) government for giving the state capital the same standing as the affluent Ikoyi area. “This place is now our own Ikoyi…You and your deputy have turned GRA to Ikoyi GRA,” Fayose said.

The former governor of Ekiti also said that, despite being a PDP member, he will back Biodun Oyebanji, the current APC governor, in his bid for reelection in 2026.

Fayose said, “I am one Nigerian who will not say what I don’t mean even if they will kill me. I will say it. I am not a member of APC, let me put that on record again. I am not a member of APC and I will never be a member but I will not shy away from the fact that what is good is good.

“When the news of your nomination came about six years ago, (there were) so many reservations but you have proved the bookmakers wrong including myself. All the bookmakers, you have proved us wrong that it is not the colour of the pack but what is right inside that thing. You are a different breed of politician.

“You brought everybody together like my governor in Ekiti, Oyebanji, brought everybody together. I always tell people who care to listen, I am a PDP member but I will support Oyebanji in the next election. It is not about politics, it is who Oyebanji is.”

Sanwo-Olu promised to support the development of infrastructure in each of the state’s 20 local government districts. “No part of the state will be left untouched or behind,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu had a difficult journey to become governor of Lagos in 2019 because he had to run against Akinwunmi Ambode, the incumbent governor who was running for reelection and had won over many Lagos residents with his infrastructure signatures throughout the state, on the APC ticket. Supported by Lagos powerbroker Bola Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu defeated Ambode in the party’s primary and went on to win the state’s 2019 governorship election. He subsequently won reelection in 2023.
