In Ohokobe Ndume, Umuahia, Abia State, a 70-year-old man’s home was destroyed by angry youths in retaliation for a youth’s death.

On Saturday, November 2, Bright Odizuru, 30, was shot and killed by suspect Stephen Irobunda for playing football in front of his home.

On Tuesday, November 5, the structure was demolished by local youths, who also damaged other questionable property.

According to local sources who spoke to reporters, some young people were playing football during the election near the suspect’s home because the state government had restricted their movement because of the Saturday Local Government election.

Sources claim that the elderly man had previously cautioned them against playing football near his home but was ignored by the youths which angered the suspect.

“After the old man had warned them several times to stop the football, the youths refused, leading to a tense argument between the aged man and the youths,” the source narrated.

“The old man in order for him to forcefully stop the youths from playing football went inside his house, brought out his dane gun and fired in the air to scare them away but the youths after running away regrouped and went back to Irobunda house to find out why he was trying to intimidate them with gunshots.”

The source further revealed that following a furious altercation, the suspect pulled out his gun once more and shot one of the young people in the abdomen, resulting in Bright Odizuru’s death.

The young man’s death infuriated the Ohokobe Mbaocha teenagers, who attacked the suspect and tried to lynch him until security personnel came to his aid.

The angry youngsters attempted to burn down his house as well, but the security guards stopped them.

The incident was confirmed by ASP Maureen Chinaka, spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command.

“Following information to the Ehimiri Police Station, the police went in and rescued the suspect from a mob that was about to lynch him, adding that investigation is ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
