Youths will take over leadership positions in Igboland – OYC President Igboayaka

The National President of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, has declared that young people are preparing to assume leadership roles in Igboland, claiming that the existing leaders have let the region down.

He made this statement in Umuahia on Saturday during the swearing-in ceremony for the new executives of the Abia State branch of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC).

Expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of public infrastructure including schools, hospitals, and other essential services Igboayaka accused former leaders of neglecting government assets while focusing on building their personal businesses.

He urged the newly inaugurated Abia State OYC chairman, Eugene Okonta, along with his executive team, to prevent individuals with tainted records from being elected into positions of authority in the region.

Highlighting the importance of unity among Igbo youth, Igboayaka explained that the council is leading a new movement to hand over leadership duties to the younger generation throughout Igboland.

In his address, the incoming OYC chairman in Abia State, Eugene Okonta, vowed to fully dedicate himself to advancing the shared goals of Igbo youths and the broader Igbo community. He assured that the OYC in Abia would fulfill its role effectively under his leadership.

Okonta also mentioned plans to collaborate with government bodies, security agencies, private sector organizations, and faith-based youth groups to combat crime and reduce societal issues affecting young people in Alaigbo.

Additionally, he urged federal and state representatives from the region to introduce legislation that would directly tackle the problem of youth unemployment across Igboland.

“I must call upon my fellow youths to keep away from crimes and drugs, which is injurious to health. The current downturn and economic hardship, in the country, are not enough reasons to engage in sharp practices, like kidnapping, cybercrime and other sorts of criminality,” Okonta said.
