Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly dismissed the possibility of surrendering any part of Ukraine’s territory to Russia, shortly after announcements from both Washington and Moscow confirmed plans for a major summit aimed at resolving the conflict that has lasted three years.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet on August 15 in Alaska the U.S. state geographically closest to Russia for discussions that, according to the Kremlin, will center on achieving a “long-term peaceful settlement” to the ongoing war.

While unveiling plans for the summit on Friday, Trump hinted at a potential “swapping of territories to the betterment of both” countries, though he offered no further details.

In response, Zelensky posted a firm rebuttal on social media: “Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier.

“Any decisions against us, any decisions without Ukraine, are also decisions against peace. They will achieve nothing. The war cannot be ended without us, without Ukraine.”

He emphasized that Kyiv remains open to “real decisions” that can bring an end to the war, but made it clear that any agreement must preserve Ukraine’s dignity.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, the conflict has resulted in the displacement of over 10 million people and caused tens of thousands of deaths.

Despite several rounds of negotiations this year, talks between Kyiv and Moscow have failed to yield progress. Putin has refused direct talks with Zelensky, while Ukraine insists it must have a seat at the table for any final agreement.

The Alaska summit marks the first in-person meeting between a U.S. and Russian president since Joe Biden sat down with Putin in Geneva in June 2021.

The Kremlin described Alaska as a “logical” venue for the summit, citing the state’s close geographical ties and shared Arctic economic interests with Russia.

In a further diplomatic move, Moscow has invited Trump for an official visit to Russia, signaling a possible shift in U.S.-Russia relations, despite ongoing combat along Ukraine’s 1,000-kilometer front line.

Earlier, it was reported that Putin also held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, both of whom have presented their own peace initiatives—none of which have made significant progress.

These developments come as the U.S. continues to escalate economic pressure on Moscow, including newly imposed tariffs on India due to its continued purchase of Russian crude oil.

Meanwhile, violence persisted into the weekend. Ukrainian officials said a Russian missile struck a civilian bus in the southern city of Kherson, killing two people and injuring six others. Both sides also reported drone attacks overnight.
