Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected an offer from the United States to claim ownership of about 50 percent of his country’s rare earth mineral rights.

This offer was made by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during a visit to Kyiv on Wednesday.

The offer followed comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who had suggested that the United States was entitled to half a trillion dollars’ worth of Ukraine’s resources in return for its support to the war-torn country.

However, according to the Financial Times, Zelenskyy insisted that any agreement regarding the country’s mineral reserves should be directly linked to security guarantees from both the U.S. and European nations.

The Ukrainian president is also interested in involving other countries, including European Union states, in the future exploitation of Ukraine’s natural resources.

The proposal from Trump, delivered by Bessent, only addressed the U.S. gaining access to Ukraine’s resources in exchange for past military support, without offering similar assistance for the future.

In remarks made to reporters in Munich on Saturday, Zelenskyy stated, “We are still talking. “I have had different dialogues.”

He further noted, “not in our interests today . . . not in the interests of sovereign Ukraine”  to accept the current terms of the U.S. deal.
