Members of the National Assembly allegedly accepted payments to back the proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, according to former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

The former president was seen speaking with Ikenga Ugochinyere of the House of Representatives, who refuted claims that federal politicians received $200,000 apiece to back the emergency rule.

“Nobody gave anyone $200,000. That is just what I want to correct,”he said.

The former president, however, maintained that he was directly aware of the payments. He said he was informed about it by those who received the funds.

He said, “You can say anything. I heard it from the horse’s mouth. You can deny it, that is alright, but I heard it from those who got it and told me that they got it. If you didn’t get it, then maybe your case is different. Don’t tell me what I know. Most of your members who got it told me that they got it.”

The Chairman of the House Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mukhtar Betara has denied allegations that MPs were paid in cash to get support for the emergency declaration. This accusation comes after his rejection.
