Former Real Madrid boss, Zinedine Zidane, is poised to succeed Didier Deschamps as the head coach of the France national team.

The development comes after Les Bleus suffered a 2-0 defeat to Spain in the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday night.

Deschamps had already announced that he would step down from his position once the tournament concludes.

His final match in charge of France will now be the third-place playoff against either England or Argentina later this weekend.

Football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, wrote on X: “OFFICIAL: Didier Deschamps’ cycle as France head coach comes to an end. It’s over.

“Last game for the 3rd and 4th place then his goodbye… and the start of Zinedine Zidane era.”
