France captain, Kylian Mbappe, has said his side abandoned their original tactical approach during their 2-0 defeat to Spain in the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Les Bleus fell behind in the opening half after Spain were awarded a penalty, which Mikel Oyarzbal confidently converted to give his team the lead.
Spain extended their advantage after the interval when Pedro Porro completed a well-crafted attacking move with a composed finish.
Reflecting on the defeat after the final whistle, Mbappe explained the tactical shortcomings that contributed to Didier Deschamps’ side’s elimination from the tournament.
He said: “Right from the start, we were pressing three against two… and we messed up there. Against Spain, you have to press man for man.
“We didn’t activate the game plan. When you don’t do what you’re supposed to do in a World Cup semifinal… you don’t win.
