In preparation for the 2026 elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) campaign will start on August 25, 2025, and last for a year.

In a recent interview with Channels Television, Rotimi Oyekanmi, the INEC Chairman’s chief press secretary, revealed this.

He clarified that the registration process will be conducted both online and at certain physical locations throughout the nation.

“The online registration will not be for just one week as some people think,” Oyekanmi clarified.

“It will operate side by side with the in-person registration, which starts on the 25th of August, and this will continue for a whole year.”

He claims that INEC has already set up 811 locations across the country, including its 774 state headquarters and local government offices, to provide access to the exercise.

“We want to encourage Nigerians to take advantage of that,” he said.

The CPS emphasized that both Nigerians who have never registered before and those who have recently turned 18 are eligible to participate in the activity.

But he warned against registering more than once.

“It is against the law to register more than once. If you register again, our system will flag you, and it is punishable under the law,” Oyekanmi cautioned.

He further mentioned that INEC has established a contact line to answer questions and posted the addresses of every registration facility on its website.

Oyekanmi cautioned against waiting until the last minute while encouraging citizens to register as soon as possible.

“Because this is a year-long activity, Nigerians have ample time. Don’t wait till July next year or two weeks to the end of it. That will only create unnecessary pressure on our offices. And we don’t want a situation where we would say postpone, and postpone,” he added.
