The Labour Party (LP) has formally backed Peter Obi as its presidential candidate in the 2027 general election.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, made the news on Friday in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

According to Arabambi, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) is certain that Obi will contest and potentially topple President Bola Tinubu in the 2019 elections.

In addition to endorsing Obi for president, the party confirmed its support for Abia State Governor Alex Otti’s re-election campaign.

Similarly, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has been named the party’s gubernatorial candidate for Lagos State in the upcoming election cycle.

Arabambi emphasised the party’s unity under Obi’s leadership and expressed optimism that Nigerians, particularly the youth would rally behind LP in the 2027 elections.

“Our primary objective is to remove the APC from power through legitimate democratic means if Nigerians so choose,” Arabambi stated.

He further stated that Obi will once again represent the Labour Party in the presidential contest, while Governor Otti and Rhodes-Vivour will receive full party support for their elections in Abia and Lagos.

Peter Obi previously ran in the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party flag, finishing third behind Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Regardless of the outcome, Obi remains a key player in Nigeria’s political landscape, with his movement gaining steam, particularly among young voters and advocates for governance reforms.

The Labour Party’s early endorsement of Obi reflects its strategic stance ahead of the 2027 elections, as it attempts to consolidate support and provide a formidable challenge to the ruling party.
