The political landscape of the city has been rocked by Mudashiru Obasa’s impeachment as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Ninety percent of the legislators voted in favour of Obasa’s removal from office during Monday’s plenary session after he was accused of egregious misbehaviour and abuse of office.

Mojeed Fatai was elected as the new Deputy Speaker, while his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, was sworn in as the new Speaker.

Political analysts speculate that Obasa’s departure is related to his alleged 2027 bid for governor.

According to reports, the Agege politician, who is renowned for creating grassroots organisations under the “Obasa Support Group,” had disagreements with senior party officials and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to sources, party leaders were alarmed by Obasa’s recent actions, which included a bill that would have given the Assembly the authority to dismiss the chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

President Bola Tinubu apparently overheard his claimed “disrespect” for Sanwo-Olu and took decisive action.

“His attitude towards the governor became a major issue. He was invited to a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, and that sealed his fate,” a source told Business Day.

Controversies, including accusations of corruption, had plagued Obasa’s term. A few weeks prior to his impeachment, he was accused of spending ₦17 billion on a gate for the Assembly in a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which he denied as politically motivated.

Following the Assembly’s rejection of several of the governor’s commissioner choices, which was perceived as part of their ongoing conflict, the former Speaker’s tense relationship with Governor Sanwo-Olu also came under investigation.

The impeachment of Obasa is seen by analysts as a power struggle inside the Lagos APC, with Tinubu reclaiming his position of authority in order to keep control before the 2027 elections.

According to public affairs analyst Dayo Kayode,“It’s all about 2027. The APC is positioning itself strategically, and Obasa’s ambition was unsettling for the party’s hierarchy.”

Despite Obasa’s denials, the political manoeuvres surrounding his departure imply that he had no intention of running for governor.

The Lagos Assembly is entering a new era with the appointment of Mojisola Meranda, who is expected to be more in line with Tinubu and the party’s long-term goals.
