A recent diss track by Canadian rapper Drake featuring an artificial intelligence (AI) rendition of the late rapper 2Pac’s voice against Kendrick Lamar has the estate of the late American hip-hop legend threatening legal action.
The attorney, Howard King, threatened to “pursue all of its legal remedies” against Drake unless he removed the diss track in less than a day in a cease-and-desist letter sent on Wednesday.
“Not only is the record a flagrant violation of 2Pac’s publicity and the estate’s legal rights, it is also a blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time,” the letter partly reads.
“The unauthorized, equally dismaying use of 2Pac’s voice against Kendrick Lamar, a good friend to the Estate who has given nothing but respect to 2Pac and his legacy publicly and privately, compounds the insult.”
The song “Taylor Made Freestyle,” which Drake released on Friday, has voiceovers from artificial intelligence (AI) for the late 2Pac and Snoop Dogg.
Now that Drake has requested permission, 2Pac’s estate has stated unequivocally that it “would never have given its approval for this use.”
