An Iranian court has convicted rapper Toomaj Salehi to death for his support of anti-hijab demonstrations.

The rapper has been behind bars for over a year and a half because of his support of the protest movement that began after Mahsa Amini passed away in 2022, only days after she was detained for donning an “improper” hijab.

“Branch 1 of Isfahan Revolutionary Court… sentenced Toomaj Salehi to death on the charge of corruption on Earth,” his lawyer Amir Raisian stated on Wednesday.

Salehi was taken into custody in October 2022 after endorsing the anti-hijab protests in public.

Salehi was charged with “assistance in sedition, assembly and collusion, propaganda against the system and calling for riots” by the Revolutionary Court.

After reviewing the case, the Iranian Supreme Court directed the subordinate court to “remove the flaws in the sentence.”

Nevertheless, Raisian claimed that the court had “in an unprecedented move, emphasised its independence and did not implement the Supreme Court’s ruling.”

The rapper “will certainly appeal against the sentence,” according to Raisian.
