4B movement: Women vow they’ll never have sex with men again after Donald Trump’s win

The controversial South Korean movement, which involves women vowing never to date, sleep marry, or have children with men again, is being studied by women in the United States.

The idea that most Americans would choose anyone, even a convicted felon, over a woman has been reinforced by the rise in searches for the “4B movement” following Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris.

The 4B movement began in 2019 as a protest against patriarchy. It represents four Korean words that start with the English terms “bi” or “no”:

Bihon – no hetrosexual marriage

Bichulsan – no childbirth

Biyeonae – no dating

Bisekseu – no heterosexual sexual relationship

The 4B movement is being studied by women.

So, in order to boycott a system that they believe upholds female inequality, supporters promise not to date, have sex, get married, or have children with a man. The 4B movement view is that marriage is an existential threat to women.

According to a 2018 research, intimate partner abuse has murdered at least 824 women in the nation over the past nine years and put another 602 at risk of dying. According to a 2021 study, one in three Korean women had been victims of domestic abuse, with intimate partners being accountable for 46% of these incidents.

In England and Wales, two women are killed by their current or former partners every week, and one in four women will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives.

“Practicing bihon means you’re eliminating the risks that come from heterosexual marriage or dating,” Yeowon, a 26-year-old Busan office worker, told The Cut.

During the election, reproductive rights were a major concern.

Given that it is primarily anonymous, it is difficult to determine how extensive the 4B movement is, but social media seems to have been the driving force behind the increase in searches for women’s reproductive rights in the USA after the election.

“American women, looks like it’s time to get influenced by Korea’s 4B movement,” one woman wrote on X.

Another said, “American women, it’s time to learn from the Koreans and adopt the 4B movement.”

A third person wrote: “The women in South Korea are doing it. It’s time we join them. Men will NOT be rewarded, nor have access to our bodies.”
