Niger: Police launch probe after suspected illegal miners die in custody

The Niger State Police Command has opened an investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners who reportedly died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.

The Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, ordered the probe following the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 17, 2026.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, individuals arrested over alleged illegal mining activities were found dead while being detained at the NSCDC Niger State Command.

Elleman directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Minna, to lead the investigation and determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The command called on family members, relatives and members of the public who have credible information that could aid the investigation to approach the SCID, Minna, with such information.

The Commissioner also appealed for calm, urging residents, relatives and acquaintances of the deceased to remain peaceful, law-abiding and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

He assured the public that the command would conduct a comprehensive investigation to establish the cause of the deaths.

Elleman reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting human rights and promoting accountability in the performance of statutory duties by law enforcement agencies.
