In response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Wednesday that the United States need to be renamed as “Mexican America.”
Following Trump’s pledge to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, this occurred.
Sheinbaum presented a 17th-century world map that depicted North America as “Mexican America” during her daily morning press conference.
“Why don’t we call it (the United States) Mexican America?” Sheinbaum flipped the script on Trump, pointing out that the United Nations recognised the Gulf of Mexico as the name. Doesn’t it sound good? He mentioned names, and we are discussing them as well.
She gave her word that she hoped to get along well with the next president of the United States.
Recall that on Tuesday, Trump, who will take office for a second term on January 20, announced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America because, in his words, it has a lovely ring.
“It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country,” he said.
He also said that drug cartels controlled Mexico, to which Sheinbaum retorted that the people of Mexico are in charge.
Trump has regularly attacked Mexico in the lead-up to his return to office, threatening to put high tariffs on goods coming from one of the US’s largest trading partners unless it stops the flow of narcotics and illegal migrants across the border.
Additionally, he has brought back a threat from his first term: the designation of Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organisations.
