The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) crisis took a fresh turn when the party’s South-South Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) banned Chief Felix Omemu, the Zonal Secretary, for a month due to allegations of wrongdoing.

According to ZINGTIE, Chief Omemu was suspended during Saturday’s South-South Executive Committee meeting in Benin City for allegedly making unapproved media remarks that cast doubt on the gathering.

The resolution for the suspension of Chief Omemu was moved by Martin Chike Amaewhule, the Speaker of Chief Nyesom Wike’s faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly at the meeting.

Amaewhule charged Omemu in the motion with misbehavior, betraying confidence, and sowing discord among members.

Additionally, Amaewhule claimed that Omemu’s suspension resulted from his unapproved remarks in the media, discouraging members from going to the South-South ZEC meeting.

“Chief Felix Omemu must be suspended, and a disciplinary committee must be established to look into him,” he said.

He added that Omemu’s actions were unlawful and intended to sow division by keeping members from traveling to Benin for the South-South ZEC meeting.

Godwin Offiono, a member of the House of Representatives who represents the Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency, seconded the motion.

George Turnah, the PDP Zonal Legal Adviser, was sworn in as Acting Zonal Secretary to succeed Omemu after his suspension.

Shortly after the suspension, Chief Dan Orbih, the National Vice Chairman, South-South, praised the members of the Zonal Executive Committee for their action, pointing out that the suspension was an important step in restructuring the party and curbing excesses.

Orbih believed that the party’s advancement at the state and federal levels had been hampered by the absence of an internal loyalty reward scheme.

He pointed out that party tickets were frequently given to people who didn’t support the party instead of devoted supporters who merited them.

He underlined that in order to solve the party’s problems at the state, zonal, and national levels, the ZEC meeting had become essential.

“We are here today to tackle the challenges facing the PDP and ensure the South-South zone emerges as the strongest in the country.

“The party’s Constitution, not the party itself, must be supreme, ensuring decisions are made according to the constitutional provisions.

“I often hear people say that the party is supreme, but I beg to disagree. For me, the party’s Constitution is supreme not the party.

“Today, we will be following the constitutional provisions of our party’s constitution in reaching all the decisions today in order to build a stronger party.

“A lot of things are wrong with our party and the time to start doing the right thing is now and we must begin by restoring internal democracy which is lacking.

“Our party has no internal reward system for loyal members because the party’s tickets are gifted to those who don’t believe in the party, he said.

However, the South-South Zone National Vice Chairman emphasized that the party’s reconstruction required reestablishing internal democracy and tackling problems like loyalty rewards.

Noting that the moment for change is now, he also said that party members need to concentrate on reorienting the party.

The Zonal Chairman, senators, members of the House of Representatives, and delegates from five states—aside from Awka Ibom State—attended the South-South Zonal Executive Committee meeting.

ZINGTIE remembers that Chief Omemu deemed the meeting organized by Chief Dan Orbih, the National Vice Chairman, South South, unlawful in a statement released in Yenagoa.

Omemu highlighted that the Zonal Working Committee, ZWC, had never considered or agreed to hold a meeting of the Zonal Executive Council.
