Malam Garba Shehu, the spokesperson for former President Muhammadu Buhari, has provided an explanation for why Buhari did not attend Wednesday’s All Progressives Congress (APC) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
Key APC leaders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, governors, National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, members of the National Working Committee (NWC), and other stakeholders were present at the high-profile event, which was chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Buhari, former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai, and former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi were among the noticeable absences, though.
Shehu explained in an interview with BBC Hausa that Buhari was given a short notice to attend the meeting, therefore it would be impossible for him to go from Daura, his hometown, to Abuja in time.
“President Muhammadu Buhari is not a caucus member of the party. He was supposed to attend the NEC meeting, but unfortunately, the invitation reached him only a day before the event. Even if he owned a private jet, he could not have made it in time,” Shehu stated.
Shehu highlighted Buhari’s extensive ties to the APC despite his absence, pointing out that he was a founding member and twice ran for president under the party’s banner.
“Buhari may not have been physically present, but his spirit was with the attendees. He is and will always be a dedicated member of the APC,” Shehu added.
