According to former vice president Atiku Abubakar, freedom of opinion and association are fundamental democratic rights rather than perks.

In reaction to the current wave of PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) defections, Atiku made this statement.

After Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other party members defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC, he made this claim in a statement on X on Friday.

“Let me be unequivocal: freedom of association and expression are not optional in a democracy — they are fundamental rights.

“Alongside these stand the pillars of a just and functional democratic society: the people, the rule of law, credible elections, and accountability. Undermine any of these, and democracy itself begins to crumble,” he wrote.

According to ZINGTIE, Oborevwori deserted the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC), and his immediate predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa is expected to join the ruling party shortly.

Recall that Oborevwori, who ran on the PDP platform and won the 2023 election, succeeded Okowa as Delta’s governor.

Other governors and important party members are reportedly considering to leave the PDP, which has lost a number of members to the ruling APC in recent weeks.

According to the former vice president, any effort to undermine these principles directly jeopardizes Nigeria’s democracy’s continued existence.

According to him, political alignments and defections are a natural element of the nation’s developing democracy and shouldn’t be interpreted as treachery.

“As someone who believes deeply in democratic ideals, I bear no ill will towards anyone who chooses a different political path.

“Politics will always involve shifting alliances, we’ve seen them in the past and we’ll see more in the future,” he added.
