Bode George, a former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claims that the opposition party is not in any danger ahead of the general elections in 2027 because of the recent defection of important PDP politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State.
George made this claim in an interview with Channels Television’s “Politics Today” program on Friday, characterizing the defections as a recurring political phenomenon with minimal long-term implications for the PDP.
This follows the Wednesday APC defection of Delta other Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy Monday Onyeme, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, as well as a number of commissioners and other political leaders.
George, when asked about the enormous movement of PDP members in Delta, apparently including former governor James Ibori and other political heavyweights, downplayed any concerns.
“Nothing. Nothing. The fact that these guys moved en masse… the people of Delta are waiting. Because what impact has the APC, as a government, given to the people?
“There is anger in the land. What do you think they are going to do there, if not for personal embellishment?
“The people of Delta are naturally PDP members. They know the kind of positive impact they enjoyed under the PDP national government.
“So, if you now decide to go, we wish you the best of luck. We’ve seen it before—those who trooped out eventually came back, because they’re heading into an organisation that is so personally owned,” the former Ondo State military governor said.
The 79-year-old remained unfazed when asked further about the significance of losing such a diverse range of political personalities, including Okowa himself, the PDP’s 2023 vice presidential candidate.
“Is it new in the land? You’ve forgotten the time when heavyweights left during the national convention of our party? Let me ask you— those already in APC, do you think they’ll fold their arms and say ‘welcome’?
“They have their ambitions too—governorship, National Assembly, local government. You can’t just waltz in and take over,” he added.
He asserted that such defections do not indicate the PDP’s demise but rather are a natural part of Nigeria’s political landscape.
In response to the idea that the most recent wave of defections, which included PDP governors endorsing President Bola Tinubu, would represent a turning point for the party, the member of the PDP board of trustees (BoT) reaffirmed that the development is only transitional.
