Isaac Ochekliye Agbo, a member of the Benue State House of Assembly, has pointed to state governors as a major factor in the growing insecurity in Nigeria.

He accused these governors of withholding the necessary funds from local governments, which are crucial for addressing security concerns at the grassroots level.

During a security summit held at the Deputy Governor’s office in Makurdi over the weekend, Agbo, who represents Ohimini State Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Rural Development, stated that “governors are the issue,” expressing disapproval of their control over local government finances.

“These governors get a lot of money, which does not trickle down to the local government areas. Governors are the problem. Let us tell ourselves the truth,” Agbo said.

He argued that local governments, which are in direct contact with the people, are purposefully weakened, leaving communities vulnerable to criminal activities.

Agbo also called for action from the military, urging them to step up their efforts. “If what we are facing is a conventional war, we should confront it head-on. The military must rise to the occasion and protect our communities,” he urged.

Other participants at the summit shared similar concerns. Lazarus Mom, a security consultant for the NGO Lawyers Alert, highlighted the importance of community policing, referencing the success of security committees in Guma and Katsina-Ala local government areas in reducing crime.

In a similar tone, Terwase Uche, the representative for Guma 1 Constituency, criticized the poor management of security funds, pointing out that despite significant amounts allocated for security, basic tools like vehicles for local government chairmen are still absent.

“We are not seeing the Hilux and motorbikes that the governor launched. Local government chairmen do not even have vehicles to function. This is a huge joke and caricature of governance,” Uche fumed.
