The foundation plans to allocate half of its donations to new recipients, with a focus on supporting journalism and organisations such as More Perfect Union, Deep South Today, and the National Trust for Local News. According to Ian Fuller, the Casey Foundation’s board chair, “We’re doing this very specifically to ensure that organisations across our country have the full weight of our resources to serve communities that are actively under attack from the administration.
Carmen Rojas, the foundation’s president, added that the organisation is committed to providing resources to fill information and organising voids. “We are stepping in to provide resources where organisations see an opportunity to fill an information and organising void,” she said.
This move is part of a larger effort by philanthropic organisations to increase funding in response to current challenges. Over 115 organisations have signed the Meet the Moment pledge, a collaborative initiative launched by the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project and other groups. Other foundations, such as the Freedom Together and Northwest Area foundations, have pledged to double their grantmaking, while the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation will increase its giving to 6 per cent over the next two years.
The Casey Foundation’s funding commitment will come directly from its endowment, which stood at over $856 million as of 2023. This significant investment reflects the foundation’s commitment to supporting organizations and communities in need
