The Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General AE Abubakar, has disclosed that terrorists in Nigeria’s North-East have started using armed drones in their attacks.

During a press briefing, General Abubakar shared details about recent developments in the fight against insurgency. “Since November of last year, we noticed the introduction of the use of armed drones to carry out attacks,” he stated.

He warned that these drones, similar to those used in conflict zones like Ukraine and Israel, are challenging to detect with conventional radar systems, presenting a major threat to military defenses.

This emerging tactic underscores the terrorists’ increasing ability to adapt, the commander noted. He linked the shift in their strategy to the instability in the Sahel region, where the looting of military barracks has enabled the illegal influx of advanced weaponry into Nigeria.

“The weapons find their way down into Nigeria due to our large and porous borders,” he said.

To combat these evolving threats, the military has implemented significant changes, including a reassessment of troop deployments and enhanced surveillance efforts.

“In the last two months, we have been re-strategizing and reorganizing. The Chief of Army Staff was here just a week ago, and several changes have been made in the theatre,” Abubakar added.

While acknowledging recent attacks in Rann, Gajiram, and Dikwa, the commander pointed out that all but one of the assaults were successfully repelled. The attack in Rann, however, led to the loss of four soldiers.

Despite these challenges, General Abubakar stressed the military’s determination and appealed for national support.

“Our troops are highly motivated, and our resilience is not dampened. In time, we will completely defeat terrorism,” he said.

He further warned terrorists operating in the North-East to surrender, pointing to former comrades who were treated humanely, or face elimination.

The commander also emphasized that national security is a collective responsibility, not solely that of the military, and urged all Nigerians to actively support the armed forces by providing intelligence and helping to identify and isolate criminal elements within their communities.

“Nigerians must continue to assist the military in fishing out the bad elements,” he concluded.
