Dr. Iziaq Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, has reaffirmed the federal government’s dedication to making essential eye care services accessible to every Nigerian.

He delivered this message on Thursday in Abuja at the Eyeball Summit organized by the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN).

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the summit carried the theme: “Shaping the Future of Eye Care in Nigeria: Strengthening Systems Through Strategic Alliances.”

Salako highlighted that the theme is both relevant and in line with the ministry’s current emphasis on targeted health sector investments.

He further mentioned that the focus mirrors the broader objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to provide Nigerians with timely and affordable healthcare services.

Addressing the growing issues such as the increasing cases of vision impairment and the surge in demand for eye care, he stressed that the ministry alone cannot solve these challenges.

He underlined that partnerships are vital to making eye care accessible across all regions and economic levels in the country.

“This summit serves as an important platform to collectively strategise and propose concrete solutions that can strengthen the eye care system in Nigeria.

“It can not be optimally productive without strategic alliances, collaboration and cooperation.

“It is through partnerships that we can pool resources, share expertise and develop innovative solutions to overcome the gaps in eye care provision,” Salako said.

He added that this approach would involve promoting routine eye check-ups and ensuring that infrastructure and skilled professionals are in place for effective service delivery.

He also emphasized that collaborations would help shape policies supportive of eye health and enhance continuous professional development, ensuring practitioners remain up-to-date in their expertise.

“The government remains dedicated to providing the necessary tools, policies, and a conducive environment to enable you to perform your duties effectively,” he said.

“Under this administration, we will continue to improve access to affordable eye care services, particularly important in a country where many people live in underserved areas.”

Dr. Obinna Awiaka, the Board’s Registrar, emphasized that the summit served as a testament to their collective commitment, determination, and forward-thinking goals.

He explained that it highlighted the board’s unwavering drive toward excellence, with a strong focus on continuous learning, innovation, and collaboration, all anchored in a sincere dedication to preserving and improving the vision of every Nigerian.

He added that, in a time defined by fast-paced technological advancements, evolving patient expectations, and increasingly complex healthcare demands, it is essential for those responsible for eye health to remain proactive and adaptable.

“We must constantly evolve, embracing innovation while upholding the highest ethical and professional standards.

“The theme speaks to a fundamental truth: No single entity, no matter how skilled or committed, can achieve transformative change alone,” he said.
