2027: El-Rufai’s son reveals Atiku’s growing support in North

Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has claimed that the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Atiku Abubakar, is gaining increasing acceptance among core Northerners.

According to Bashir, the development represents a significant shift in Atiku’s political journey, arguing that the former vice president is receiving a level of support from the core North that he has not previously enjoyed.

He made the disclosure in a post shared on his X account while commenting on Atiku’s political standing ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Bashir attributed the reported change partly to Atiku’s reputation for presenting himself as one of the most historically detribalised political figures among the major contenders.

Posting on X, Bashir wrote: “Atiku is gaining traction in the North. For the first time in his political career, he is being embraced by the core North, in part because of his mantra of being the most detribalised, historically, of the bunch.”

The former governor’s son also claimed that Atiku’s position on the fuel subsidy debate has unsettled the government.

His comments come as political parties and their candidates intensify efforts to build support across different regions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He added: “That calculus could be the game-changer. They are rattled. This subsidy debate forged by Atiku forms a perfect narrative to the realities on the ground.

“When I visit my father, I always leave truly amazed by how it is we, on the outside, that are bothered. His resilience, uplifting spirit and usual banter hit in a profound way.

“I asked whether he still believes this sacrifice was worth it. Without hesitation, he said YES.”
