A group of civil society organisations has formally lodged a complaint against well-known activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, with the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, and relevant media oversight bodies.

The coalition urged these institutions to clearly dissociate themselves from Sowore’s methods, asserting that remaining silent would be equivalent to endorsing his conduct.

They also called for an immediate probe into Sowore’s activities.

Their request is based on what they allege is a persistent pattern of cyberbullying, spreading of false information, and targeted attacks on individuals’ reputations by the media figure.

During a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, the Independent Public Service and Accountability Watch, together with other aligned civil society groups, accused Sowore of misusing his media outlet to propagate misinformation and foster public mistrust, all under the banner of activism.

Coalition spokesperson Adeniran Taiwo remarked, “What began as a meaningful voice of opposition has now deteriorated into a harmful mix of arrogance, deception, and intentional defamation.”

They cautioned Sowore against using his news organization as a means of personal retaliation instead of promoting factual reporting.

The group described his current brand of activism as “disguised digital extremism,” claiming it misguides Nigerian youth and undermines national pride.

“He has turned malicious defamation into a profession… consistently portraying Nigeria as a failed nation in pursuit of an agenda driven by instability,” Taiwo added.

The coalition doubled down on their appeal for oversight agencies to publicly reject Sowore’s approach, repeating that “silence is complicity.”

They ended their statement by urging prompt government action, warning that unchecked behavior like Sowore’s could lead to further exploitation of digital platforms under the pretense of civic participation.
