The Executive Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Mrs. Chineye Anosike, has appealed to the Abia State government for assistance in recovering outstanding loan repayments from civil servants, covering the period from 2019 through May 2025.
She made this appeal in Umuahia during a courtesy visit to the Abia State Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere, alongside other members of the bank’s management team.
Mrs. Anosike expressed concern over the failure of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to remit deducted payments, noting that this has hindered proper record-keeping and affected the sustainability of the loan scheme.
While commending Governor Alex Otti’s administration for its strides in governance since taking office, Anosike also revealed that the final set of keys completing a batch of 100 houses built by the Federal Mortgage Bank at the Ubani Housing Estate had been officially distributed to the beneficiaries.
During the meeting, Mr. Chris Okoro, a former labour union leader, raised concerns about the plight of civil servants whose contributions had been deducted over the years for housing purposes. He lamented that despite these deductions, many of them still reside in rented homes without owning a property of their own.
Responding to the delegation, Mr. Benson Ojeikere emphasized the Abia State government’s commitment to the welfare of its workforce, referring to civil servants as the backbone of both the government and the broader economy.
He acknowledged that the housing initiatives led by the Federal Mortgage Bank align with the state’s goals for employee welfare. He also encouraged the bank to restart its suspended housing projects, ensure they remain affordable, and reconsider certain eligibility requirements to make it easier for civil servants to benefit from the mortgage facilities.
