President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a full presidential pardon to the late environmental and human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, along with eight others collectively referred to as the Ogoni Nine.
This announcement was made on Thursday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day.
Additionally, Tinubu awarded national recognitions to the members of the Ogoni Nine.
He also granted posthumous national awards to several prominent figures, including the late Kudirat Abiola, Bola Ige, former President Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and other historical national heroes.
Back in November 2024, the president had expressed his commitment to addressing long-standing national injustices.
It should be remembered that Ken Saro-Wiwa and the other members of the Ogoni Nine were executed in 1995 by the military government led by the late General Sani Abacha, following allegations of involvement in murder.
The other individuals included Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine.
Last June, Tinubu’s government officially designated June 12 as a national public holiday to celebrate Democracy Day, recognizing a key moment in the country’s democratic journey.
