Veteran comedian Ali Baba has revealed the estimated financial cost associated with securing political positions in Nigeria.

In a discussion centered on corruption within the nation’s political system and leadership, Ali Baba shared these insights during an appearance on the OUTSIDE THE BOX podcast.

Known for his close ties with influential figures in Nigerian politics, he stated that securing a senatorial position could cost around ₦1.2 billion, while contesting for a governorship in some states may require between ₦20 to ₦25 billion.

He described Nigerian politics as a heavily capital-driven venture, which he believes is a major contributor to the country’s deep-rooted corruption.

Ali Baba also criticized political leaders for neglecting the real needs of citizens, choosing instead to prioritize projects that can generate personal financial gains, especially those useful during election periods.

“To win the senatorial seat is now between N1.2bn. you need N1 or 2bn to win a Senate seat. To win a house of Rep, you need another 1billion.

“State House of Assembly you need N500 million. Governorship depends on the state. For Delta State you need like about N20bn, for Rivers you need a 25 billion. For some of those states in the North maybe 4 or 5 or 6 billion naira.

“So it’s a capital intensive project, which is what is driving the corruption in our country right now. So anytime somebody is in office, the person is not thinking of education, except if whatever he wants to do in education will provide some money that they can leverage on when the time for election comes”, he disclosed.
